This listing is for a rare red Manchester United Special Edition Game Boy which was released as part of the Play It Loud series and available exclusively in the UK.

This version is highly collectable but unfortunately many that are available are in poor condition making this fully reconditioned item a great find for collectors or enthusiasts.

I clean up old consoles as a hobby and pride myself on the quality of the devices, with many of them being added to or sold from my own collection. Please read the details below to learn more about this specific console and the care I put into preparing this device for sale with details of any replacement parts that have been required.

Model: Nintendo Game Boy DMG-01

Colour: Red - Manchester United Special Edition

Functionality: Fully tested and in excellent working order

Cosmetic Condition: Very good with few noticable marks or scratches. The battery cover and link port dust cap are present and the battery terminals are in good condition. The screen is in good condition with no missing lines or scratches. The screen is good with only a small mark as shown in the photos. There are no missing horizontal or vertical lines.

Yellowing/Fading: there is minimal fading or discolouration.

Replacement Parts: The screen lens was in very bad condition so has been replaced with a new high quality glass lens that matches the darker colour of the Play It Loud series consoles to maintain authenticity. The link port duet cap is an aftermarket replacement.

Every console is photographed individually, so the item you see is the exact one you’ll receive. I try to provide clear and detailed images, please review them carefully before purchasing to assess the condition for yourself as it is very subjective and these form part of the description.

About Yellowing in Older Consoles

You may notice that some older Game Boy consoles develop a yellowish tint over time, or in some extreme cases, go almost orange. This is caused by the natural breakdown of chemicals in plastic that was widely used in the 80s and 90s following UV exposure over time. While some sellers attempt to remove yellowing using a chemical process called retrobrite, I avoid this for two important reasons:

1. Yellowing Returns: Retrobrite treatments are not permanent; the yellowing will often reappear over time..

2. Plastic Durability: Retrobrite can weaken the plastic, making it brittle and reducing the console’s lifespan.

Instead, I try to find consoles that are not significantly discoloured to begin with and when necessary I would rather re-shell a console that treat it to make it look good for sale knowing the condition will not be maintained. I will always try to be transparent about any yellowing or discolouration present, so you know exactly what you’re buying.

What has been done?

  • Cleaned the outer shell thoroughly with soapy water
  • Cleaned the internal circuit boards were required with 99% isopropyl alcohol
  • Tested all components to ensure functionality
  • Repaired or replaced worn or damaged parts as necessary using original components whenever possible and noted in the description
  • Restored the console to a condition where it can be enjoyed for years to come.

I do not use aftermarket shells or buttons unless specified and all replacement parts will be clearly noted in the description. Wherever possible I try to keep consoles as close to original as possible.
